By Cale Nuttall

Junior Samane Marks' dedication to truth and impactful storytelling has made him a rising star in South African journalism.

A Journalist's Unwavering Commitment to Truth

Junior Samane Marks, a freelance court and crime reporter for Daily Maverick and an advanced diploma student at CPUT has rapidly made a name for himself in the world of journalism. His recent second-place win at the prestigious Standard Bank Sikuvile Journalism Awards, shared with fellow Daily Maverick journalist and CPUT alumna Suné Payne, is a testament to his dedication. Their award-winning story, “Divided and Riven with Discontent,” offered a deep and gripping dive into the hidden realities of Swellendam, earning recognition for its investigative depth and impact. Marks attributes this success to his unwavering commitment to the truth and a passion for storytelling that fuels his daily work.

The Role of CPUT in Shaping a Journalist

Junior Samane Marks' passion for journalism was ignited by a deep-seated belief in the power of truth. "A part of me has always believed the world deserves the truth and not a fabrication. I'd like to believe that is the reason I pursued a career in journalism," he shares. His journey toward becoming a journalist began at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), where he built the foundation that would later propel his career.

During his time at CPUT, while completing his National Diploma in Journalism, Marks benefited from the university's hands-on, practical approach. He emphasises how this method prepared him for the realities of the profession. "While CPUT may not be as research-intensive as other institutions, it excels in providing practical, industry-focused education," he says. In an industry where adaptability and real-world experience are crucial, this approach proved invaluable.

Marks believes that for a profession like journalism, practical experience is the best preparation. “This experience of learning aligns with the needs of most industries,” he notes. By the time he graduated with his Journalism Diploma in April, he was not only armed with theoretical knowledge but also equipped with the practical skills necessary to navigate the fast-paced world of news reporting. “CPUT's practical, industry-focused education prepared me for the realities of journalism.”

Influences that Shaped a Career

During his time at CPUT, Junior Samane Marks was fortunate to cross paths with two key mentors who played a pivotal role in shaping both his character and career in journalism. The first, Dr. Nkoala, a renowned media studies professor at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and former Media and Design lecturer at CPUT, left a profound impact on Marks. Her expertise in media studies and hands-on teaching style provided him with practical skills that became fundamental to his growth as a journalist. "Her guidance has had a lasting impact on my professional development," Marks recalls.

Marks also credits Dr Trust Matsilele, a former Politics lecturer at CPUT and now a senior lecturer at Birmingham City University in the UK, for instilling values that continue to guide him. Matsilele's emphasis on integrity and commitment to excellence made an enduring impression. "He would always remind me, 'Never soil yourself,'" Marks shares, a lesson that has become a daily mantra in his work, reminding him to hold himself to the highest standards.

The influence of Dr. Nkoala and Dr. Matsilele went beyond the classroom. They not only provided practical expertise but also instilled the importance of journalistic integrity and personal character—principles that have remained at the core of Marks’ work. Their mentorship laid the foundation for the unwavering commitment to excellence seen in his reporting today, and their impact has left a mark on his career trajectory, as well as on countless other students who passed through their classes.

Entering the Industry and Building a Reputation

Marks’ rapid success as a journalist and first taste of the newsroom started during his time as an intern at Daily Maverick where he completed his work integrated learning (WIL). It is at Daily Maverick where he worked with established journalists and editors who shared his commitment to the truth. “Working alongside a talented team of seasoned journalists like Sune Payne, Velani Ludidi, Vincent Cruywagen, Caryn Dolley and a driven editorial desk of Maverick News department led by the remarkable Janet Heard, who is passionate about telling impactful stories with substance,” Marks stated.

Building on his fundamental journalistic training at CPUT, his time at Daily Maverick continues to improve his skills and integrity as a journalist. “Those are industry influencers that continue to shine a light on my career. They played a significant role in shaping my career trajectory thus far. The Daily Maverick team has helped refine my journalistic skills, fostering a keen news sense, and emphasising the importance of ethical reporting practices.”

The Sikuvile Award: Recognising Important and Impactful Reporting

In his short time as a journalist at Daily Maverick, Marks has already achieved great success and has received great recognition for his work. The article written in September 2023, “Divided and Riven with Discontent: A Deep Dive into Swellendam” speaks about the unequal economic disparity between races in the town of Swellendam. Junior Marks Samane and his college, Suné Payne expose Swellendam’s hidden realities that came to light after a series of strikes in the community.

Uncovering the inequality that exists in Swellendam is significant as it holds community members and leaders accountable as well as informs the public that economic inequality is still a very prevalent issue 30 years after Apartheid. This kind of reporting is not only important but aligns with Marks’ unwavering commitment to telling the stories that matter and conviction to the truth.

Winning the Sikuvile Award has been a defining moment in Marks’s career, reaffirming his commitment to telling stories that matter, stories that expose uncomfortable truths and spark change. For Marks, the award is not just a recognition of his current work but a signpost for the kind of journalist he aspires to be, one unafraid to tackle the most challenging and important issues facing society today.

Receiving the Sikuvile Commendation Award has encouraged Marks to continue exposing society's uncomfortable truths. He continues to strive for excellence by improving both personally and professionally.

“The Standard Bank Sikuvile award has shone a light on quite a few aspects of my life, most importantly in my career. It came at a time when I am driven by growth however, I remain humble and keep my head upon the pursuit of hard-hitting and impactful news stories”

A Journalist Committed to Truth and Growth

Junior Samane Marks has made remarkable strides in journalism, earning recognition for his work and showing no signs of slowing down. His commitment to truth and impactful storytelling has earned him accolades, including the Sikuvile Award, but this is just the beginning for Marks.

Determined to continue growing academically and professionally, Marks is pursuing advanced studies in journalism while working as a freelance court and crime reporter for Daily Maverick. His work sheds light on critical legal issues and the entrenchment of gangsterism, a testament to his focus on hard-hitting and meaningful journalism.

Looking ahead, Marks has ambitions to pursue a diplomatic scholarship in media and legal laws, reflecting his desire to influence the field beyond the newsroom. "To succeed in this industry," he reflects, "I've developed resilience through self-reflection, adaptability in fast-paced environments, and a curiosity-driven mindset." These qualities have undoubtedly shaped his career so far and will continue to guide his trajectory.

In addition to his journalism work, Marks remains connected to his academic roots, volunteering with CPUT’s FID PULSE newsletter. His editorial contributions help strengthen his writing and editorial skills, highlighting his continued dedication to self-improvement.

Personal Life and Hobbies

Although Marks's career is deeply rooted in journalism, he also finds time to pursue other passions. Born and raised in Clarens, Free State Province, Marks moved to the Eastern Cape to further his education before coming to the Western Cape. While Cape Town may now be his base, his heart remains with his family in Tsitsikamma.

Football is another significant part of his life, where he has seen moderate success in the CPUT res league. "Beyond journalism, I'm passionate about football, with a notable run in the CPUT res league, finishing third in the previous two seasons," he shares, highlighting the balance he maintains between work and play.

Committed to Ethical Journalism and a Promising Future

Marks has achieved recognition for his journalistic work thus far and has a promising career ahead of him. With ethical and impactful journalism as the cornerstone of his work, Marks will likely continue to garner positive attention. Goal-driven and determined, he has no plans to stop growing as a journalist and advocate.

His achievements, such as his second-place finish in the Standard Bank Sikuvile Journalism Awards, are just the beginning of what promises to be a remarkable career. The award not only highlights his journalistic skills but also solidifies his role as a journalist dedicated to uncovering uncomfortable truths and holding society accountable.
