A first for Cape Town, the 4x4 and Outdoor Show, held on the 19th and 20th of October, highlighted Cape Town’s growing off-road and adventure culture, drawing enthusiasts from all over the region. Hosted at the iconic Ysterplaat Air Force Base, the event blended the thrill of 4x4 with the legacy of aviation, offering a unique experience for adventure seekers and families alike.
A sea of exhibitors presented their latest gear, from cutting-edge camping trailers to rugged off-road accessories, catering to all—from the curious beginner to the seasoned veteran. The venue itself added a special touch, with military displays and SANDF recruitment opportunities offering a patriotic element. The Friends of the South African Air Force Museum also stood out, giving visitors a chance to explore aviation history through static displays.
Off-Road Culture on Full Display
South Africans have long been known for their love of bakkies and SUVs, but many of these vehicles are “pavement princesses” that rarely see a dirt road. The 4x4 and Outdoor Show proved that a thriving community of off-road adventurers still exists—people who not only own these vehicles but use them to conquer the rugged terrain they were built for. The event celebrated this adventurous spirit, and the turnout was a testament to the community’s passion and the demand for reliable, durable gear.
Marius Opperman, Director of Events at Trio Events, pointed out how versatile the industry has become: “I think this industry is so versatile, and there is a market for all categories, depending on your interest and preference, as well as your budget, of course. So, whether you are a tent camper, off-road trailer, or caravan camper—the offerings are huge.”
Attendees echoed this sentiment. One visitor commented on the excitement of the day: “I'm really amazed at the amount of stuff here. It's quite incredible. We haven't seen a 4x4 show like this for a while now, and it's nice to see that the industry is still flourishing. It's fantastic.”
Exhibitors That Stood Out
Among the many exhibitors, Andre’s 4x4 was a crowd favorite, drawing attention with TV personality and adventurer Andre. His fully kitted Isuzu D-Max, outfitted with IronMan and Beikel accessories and survival gear from Bush Lapa, seated on a set of BFGoodrich tyres demonstrated the kind of self-sufficiency remote travelers need. The stand also featured motorcycle adventurers Hans and Francois, adding a two-wheeled perspective to the world of off-roading. “We’re all in the adventure business, and people like adventure. They know me, Andre 4x4, and the show, so they’ll come and meet and greet,” said Andre.
The Ineos Automotive stand, in partnership with Andre 4x4, was another standout. It offered attendees a close-up look at the brand’s rugged vehicles, designed for explorers and overlanders alike. Visitors had the chance to ride along in the Grenadier Station Wagon and the Grenadier Quartermaster, a double cab pickup version. “It’s a new vehicle on the market, a brilliant piece of engineering,” Andre added. Alan from Ineos noted, “The segment is growing, and while there’s a lot of competition, we are truly utilitarian.”
Overlanding and camping also took center stage with brands like Conqueror Western Cape, Matt4Campers, and Bushwaka exhibiting their latest offerings. Jovan from Conqueror proudly showcased the UEV 17X, a groundbreaking new caravan model launched at the event. “This is the leader in the two-sleeper category,” he said. Matt4Campers’ Sundowner Evo 2 also stood out, having won two Australian Caravan of the Year awards. Milan from Matt4Campers described it as the flagship of their off-road range, equipped with a king-size bed, large fridge, and 175 liters of onboard water.
These showcases underscored how brands in this space continue to innovate, meeting the ever-growing demand for adventure-ready gear.
Aviation Meets Adventure
Beyond the 4x4s, the event’s connection to aviation was a major draw. Static aircraft displays, restored by the Friends of the SAAF Museum, gave attendees a nostalgic look at aviation history. Meanwhile, SANDF’s recruitment stall highlighted potential careers in the Air Force. Inside the hangars, aviation buffs could get up close with various aircraft. The day was capped off with an exciting airshow, where Air Force pilots showcased their skills with daring aerial stunts.
Family Fun and South African Flair
The event wasn’t just for hardcore adventurers. Families were catered to with quad bike rides and a kids' play park, while adults enjoyed live entertainment in the beer garden, courtesy of Jimmy’s Sauces Performing Arts. Attendees also indulged in a variety of proudly South African dishes from the many food stalls on site, adding a unique local flavor to the day’s activities.
The 4x4 and Outdoor Show at Air Force Base Ysterplaat wasn’t just a celebration of off-roading—it highlighted the diversity and excitement of outdoor life in South Africa. With top-tier exhibitors, adventure activities, and military displays, the event offered something for everyone, from the seasoned off-road enthusiast to the curious newcomer. For those looking to dive into the adventurous lifestyle or simply try something new, this event provided a thrilling glimpse into South Africa’s thriving 4x4 and outdoor culture.
